98. Shake It Off: Facing the Criticism and Embracing Your Light

Today, we discuss haters, negativity, toxicity and how you can manage and work with it.
Facing the critics (or being one) will happen to all of us and whichever side of it you’re on we
want to have an open and honest conversation about it.
Today we discuss:
• The fear we each have of our internal light and that if we step into our full light we may
experience rejection.
• How when you shine bright, you will be a threat to the system, but in the words of Marianne
Williamson, “do it anyway”.
• The importance of boundaries, and prioritizing being authentic over being liked.
• Vowing to stay away from gossip, the short term bond that erodes trust in the long run.
• Returning to the light and staying in the light as our birthright (and accepting the reality that
there will be more responsibility and pushback)
“Our Deepest Fear” by Marianne Williamson:
“Our deepest fear is not that we are inadequate. Our deepest fear is that we are powerful
beyond measure. It is our light, not our darkness, that most frightens us. We ask ourselves,
“Who am I to be gorgeous, talented, fabulous?” Actually, who are you not to be? You are a
child of God, your playing small does not serve the world. There’s nothing enlightening about
shrinking so that other people won’t feel insecure around you, we are all meant to shine as
children do, we were born to manifest the glory of God that’s within us, its not just in some of
us, it’s in every one of us and as we let our own light shine we unconsciously give other people
permission to do the same. As we are liberated from our own fear our presence automatically
liberates others.”

“I was recently struggling with a boundary issue (yes, still) and I told my therapist I refuse to go
back to saccharine – that I like solid better. Before I really understood how impossible it is to
be compassionate to myself or others when people are taking advantage of me and when I’m
prioritizing being liked over being free, I was much sweeter but less authentic. Now I’m kinder
and less judgmental. But also firmer and more solid. Occasionally salty.” -Brene Brown in
