220. Growing Ourselves up Requires Courage

In today’s episode, Betsy & Kate talk about taking accountability for our lives, and the 2 things that most stymie or growth: fear and lethargy.  Life is scary, and we realize that we can never get rid of fear, so how do we move forward with courage despite the fear.

In today’s episode we talk about:

  • Dr. James Hollis’s Book “Living An Examined Life” and his teaching that fear and lethargy thwart us most in our development.
  • Kate and Betsy’s experience with fear and its own unique manifestation for both of them – Kate fears disappointing people and Betsy fears having a voice.
  • The opportunity of the “Heroic Summons” that forces us to quit looking “out there” in the world and blaming others, and instead go in and take responsibility for our response.  Kate shares how the power of silence has always helped her when she makes big decisions.
  • 3 things to know about courage (the first one may be a hard pill to swallow).
  • Our favorite definition of courage by Chogum Trungpa: “Courage is not being afraid of yourself”.
