131. Life Quakes

In today’s episode we talk about navigating fear and “life quakes”.  A life quake is a term defined by author Bruce Fellar in his book “ Life is in the Transitions”.

He defines a life quake is a massive life disruption.

In this episode we discuss:

-Kate’s life quake of an empty nest and how she’s been anticipating and preparing for this time in her life.

-How caregiving is shifting to our aging  parents and the emotions surrounding that reality.

-The 3 distinct phases of life quakes that are non linear

  1. Long goodbye
  2. Messy middle
  3. New beginning

-Betsy’s experience with the messy middle as they are putting their house on the market after 19 years and not knowing what comes next.

-How fear plays into life quakes and the double arrow when you berate yourself for your fear

-How fear is wired into us and ways we can work with it

-How important it is to reach out when we are in the hardest darkest places –

-How we come into the world afraid of only 2 things, loud noises and falling and all other fears are conditioned.

-How fear shows up as anxiety and rumination and you can feel it in your body.

-The Buddhist term bardo which represents the in-between place and how we must not get stuck in the messy middle but go toward the bright light.
